Is everyone talking about blogging, or is it me? No – I think everyone is talking about it! Marketing skills are critical to the success of almost every company, and blogging is yet another new skill that you will need to learn.

If what blogging can do for you is a mystery we are about to tell you exactly how it works and what it can do for your natural search engine optimisation (SEO). That is increasing your visibility on the internet without having to pay for it – it doesn’t’ get much better than that – particularly in this market.

Many people I speak to are a bit dismissive about blogs and say something like – “ah yes, our blog is on our website..” my questions are; what is it doing for you, how are you using it and who are you communicating with.

Depending on your market a blog on your website for your customers (or anyone) to comment on your company, your products and services may be an enhancement to your customer’s experiences but will it help you to sell more? It might, it might not. Will a blog of this description help with your SEO – in short no.

That’s not to say this type of blog is not useful, because it is – it’s just not going to help your SEO.

How can a blog help your SEO? Here are some answers that many other types of marketing training simply don’t tell you.

When you’re blogging to communicate directly with the search engine spiders. Use a blog that is not visible to your clients i.e. not located on your website.

If you utilise blogs in this way you’ll be helping your natural SEO. When the spiders can match what is on your website with search enquiries your website pages will be published more frequently. The more frequently they are published the more they’ll be ranked and more that happens the higher you appear in the rankings, without having to pay for it.

To make it work for you must do a few things;

• Update your website regularly – once a month is fine
• When you’ve updated your website post some of your update to your blog with a link to your update – this is how you’re inviting the spiders to take a look at your updated website
• You must be careful to add links to other websites too – or it will not work

So, if you want to get more traffic to your web site, and ultimately improve your lead generation to help you close more sales, make sure that blogging is one of your marketing skills.

Blogging is an extremely popular pastime in recent years, and one of the fastest-growing kinds of sites is the celebrity blog. While it may sometimes be written by a publicity person, frequently a blog like this is composed by the actual celebrities. Yet the vast majority of blogs covering famous people are written not by the stars, but by the fans who follow them or by professional gossips who make a living talking about them.

It’s likely that these news blogs, perhaps better described as gossip blogs, came first, and that part of the reason celebrity blogs began to appear was in response to these, so the stars could take back some control of their image. But for a few years, blogs that gossiped about celebrities reigned supreme. This was no surprise, of course, since wildly popular newspaper tabloids like the National Enquirer and magazines like People had been serving a similar purpose for decades. The public has always had a high interest in juicy tidbits about the rich and famous.

But the interest in the stars, thanks to blogs that gossip about them, has attained a level that goes well beyond anything previously seen. A celebrity used to need to avoid the prying eyes of newspaper reporters and television camera crews, but even tabloids and gossip magazines have reason to be envious of the publicity achieved by the new blogs. Even fans are now suspect, posting public photos that might make the stars cringe.

Sports figures, of course, are not immune either, with sports blogs following the gossip trend, running items about players’ love lives or speculation about drugs or illegal activity. And politicians are now major targets as well, having achieved a greater level of celebrity than ever before. However squeaky clean they might portray themselves, if they’ve got a skeleton in their closet, or even just an old finger bone, then someone is going to find them out and make a blog post about it.

It’s no surprise, then, that stars also began their own weblogs, maybe to counteract the rising cacophony of unrelenting gossip. The phenomenon of blogging has been a boon to both sides of the relationship, in fact, since famous people can also get their preferred message out to millions of people. While you have gossip blogs like www.perezhilton.com or www.tmz.com on one side, on the other you have famous bloggers like Bruce Willis, Barbra Streisand, the very popular and prolific comedian Margaret Cho, soccer star David Beckham, famous chef Jamie Oliver, home style diva Martha Stewart, writer Neil Gaiman, and on and on. The blogosphere is crowded with celebrities of every description.

This may not be a good thing. Celebrity blogs might already have turned civil society into something much less civil, a nation of gossipers unjustifiably prying into the private lives of their fellow citizens, however infamous they are. Even formerly responsible news organizations now include gossip about celebrities in their papers and newscasts. Bloggers who pry into the lives of the stars may now be the “journalists” of the world, to the detriment of well-researched and reliable news.

Do you have something to say and you want to get that message out to the rest of the world? It may be just some interesting facts about your life. It could be an informative article that helps others. It could also be an article that contains links to something you are selling or want to convince others to sell. Blogging has become a great way to get information out to the public. But there is a right way to blog and a wrong way. Your goal is to do things right and get a steady following.
